PAY OR NOT?: First, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it would pay for debris removal from the flood-damaged historic Sutliff Bridge in Johnson County. Now FEMA says it won't - unless the non-profit Sutliff Bridge Authority group won't cover the cost. Then it might. Yet FEMA already has written checks for some debris removal. County supervisors, who resumed control of the bridge after the flood and voted to rebuild the structure, are confused and upset by what looks like a promise broken. Hard to blame them.

DUST BUSTERS: The Environmental Protection Agency is pondering new rules on dust. Too much particulate matter is bad for your health. But many farmers in Iowa worry that new regulations might bring unrealistic requirements. How do you harvest corn and beans without raising a cloud of dust? You gotta combine when it's dry. Go slow on this issue, EPA.

BIGGER YET: We're not the fattest state but Iowans continue to get heavier. The Centers for Disease Control says the number of obese Iowans increased from 26.9 percent of the population in 2007 to 27.9 percent last year. Several states topped 30 percent.
