GO AWAY, BUGS: The bed bug scare has led to changes at some local non-profit agencies. Most are no longer accepting donated beds or mattresses that clients in need have been able to get for low or no cost. Hopefully, the moratorium and the recent spread of the bugs both will go away soon.

UNPUNISHED: It appears unlikely that anyone will ever be prosecuted for a 2004 break-in that caused $500,000 damage and the loss of years of research information at a University of Iowa lab. Hundreds of rats and mice were released, chemicals were dumped on data and computers and other equipment was wrecked by intruders believed to be animal rights activists. An extensive FBI investigation produced only one suspect charged, and allegations against him were dropped earlier this year after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in Minnesota.

COURSES NOT UP TO SNUFF: Senior Year Plus is the state's umbrella for programs such as Advance Placement, which give high school students access to courses that can earn college credit. Thousands of seniors take at least one such class. But increasingly, these courses aren't adequately preparing some students for the intended level required at Iowa State University, President Gregory Geoffroy told us last week.
