FLOOD FEARS CRESTING: Lots of nerves were on edge in Eastern Iowa heading into the weekend. Serious flooding was breaking out in Cedar Rapids and several other communities with the potential for even worse - like in 1993 or, shudder, 2008 - depending on how the heavy rain potential played out by late Saturday. Even if our region dodged major rainfall over the weekend, the flood potential remains dangerously high as this week unfolds. The Iowa River was expected to crest in Iowa City sometime today, reaching a level that will cause considerable flooding in several locations, including some on the University of Iowa campus. Most area city and institutional leaders believe they are better prepared to respond to major flooding challenges this time around. Certainly, they're being tested this spring.

MORE TICKS REPORTED: Area experts and outdoorsmen are reporting an above-average number of ticks showing up this year. Included in the reports are the black-legged tick, more commonly known as the deer tick, which can transmit the debilitating Lyme disease to humans when they suck and reinject blood in a person. Learn how to recognize, handle and avoid these nasty critters.
