PAST CATCHES UP: Patrick Lyons, lauded by many residents for his community service, resigned his position as Vinton-Shellsburg school superintendent last Monday after he was charged with illegally voting in three local elections. Lyons was convicted of first-degree theft in Polk County in 1996. Records show he voted in 2004 and 2005 - a year before Gov. Tom Vilsack's executive order automatically restored voting rights for felons who had served their time and made any required restitution. Also, state Auditor's Office officials didn't begin cross-checking registered voter lists with lists of felons until that year.

SIGN FATIGUE: The Iowa City welcome sign on Dubuque Street has been a frequent target of vandalism since it was installed more than a decade ago. About $10,000 has been spent on repairs so far. After the sign recently was wrecked yet again, city officials say they may not repair it. Understandable. They may replace it with a more durable sign after street construction is completed in 2014. Meantime, how about removing what's left of the existing sign so it doesn't give vandals any more satisfaction or serve as an sad scar?
