ROAD BLOWOUTS: Last week's extreme heat and humidity took their toll on Iowa's highways and endangered drivers. Dozens of unpredictable pavement blowouts were reported across the state, and at least seven of those incidents forced the closure of one or more lanes of traffic, according to state transportation officials. Several repairs had to be made to Interstate 380 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. There were even reports of steel railroad tracks bending.

MORE FILM FALLOUT: The 2009 Iowa Film Office tax-credit scandal continues to eat up more taxpayer money. The state recently paid $450,000 to London filmmakers in exchange for their agreeing to cancel plans to produce movies in Iowa that could have qualified for millions in tax credits. The London-based Midsummer Films had won approval of tax credits to shoot six films. But a month later, then Gov. Chet Culver suspended the program amid evidence of fraud and mismanagement that was costing the state millions of dollars. The latest deal was the second major settlement related to the scandal and several others are expected.
