SLOCKETT REPRIMANDED: The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board voted 5-0 last week to issue of letter of reprimand to Johnson County Auditor Tom Slockett for his office's public resources for political purposes. We hope the high-profile case sends a clear signal to elected officials about the importance of keeping public duties and political considerations separate, and resisting the temptation to campaign on our dime.

IOWA LEFT BEHIND: It's disappointing, although not surprising, that Iowa was not among a group of eight states receiving waivers from federal No Child Left Behind rules. The watered-down package of education reforms approved by state lawmakers was not enough to advance Iowa's request. Iowa's request has not been denied, but state education leaders are not optimistic.

NO BREAK: Iowans hoping for a post-caucus break from political ads won't get one. National Public Radio reports that roughly 500 presidential campaign ads ran in the Cedar Rapids and Des Moines TV markets last month alone. On the bright side, it's a great time to get outside.
