Gable's call

In 2001, Dan Gable seriously considered a run for governor. Many thought he could have won. But Iowa's wrestling legend decided against it. He realized that his passion was for wrestling and Iowa's people - not politics.
Now that the final step of his retirement from the University of Iowa is history, perhaps he will be courted again to run for political office. He didn't rule it out for good back in 2001.
No one in the nation and perhaps the world has been better at competing and coaching than Gable. The Waterloo native won an Olympic gold medal after an amazing career at Iowa State University, then coached one-time rival UI to a record 15 NCAA team titles before retiring as head coach in 1997.
Yet we fear his widely respected reputation - as a relentless, passionate teacher and fierce competitor who deals directly and candidly with everyone - might be tarnished by political crossfire. Then again, perhaps Gable's independent style would serve politics and his state well.
As usual, it's your call, Dan Gable. Meantime, thanks for the great memories and stellar example of excellence.
