Denial doesn’t prohibit participation

Today is the 44th annual celebration of Earth Day, and now that the old girl has reached middle age, perhaps it is time she and her supporters adopt a more 'no nonsense” attitude in relation to climate change skeptics.
Let's start with this: Your beliefs, or your need to take up two parking spots at Hy-Vee with your Hummer, do not prevent you from participating in most Earth Day activities. In fact, 100 percent of scientists and non-scientists agree that a multitude of plants and young trees can be hauled in the back of a Hummer.
You need not own a pair of Birkenstocks to benefit from native plantings in your landscape projects. A hardy and drought-resistant Ageratina altissima (also known as white snakeroot) not only will brighten that spot of full sun in your yard, but also will save on watering bills.
If you don't like the look of drought-resistant plants or just have your heart set on a specific variety for your garden, water barrels, used to catch rain from downspouts and covered as to not become mosquito habitats, also can ease your water bill woes.
If you're feeling especially motivated this year, take the Earth Day theme, 'Green Cities,” and tackle a project for the benefit of your entire community. No one will think less of you for toting a trash bag around a neighborhood park and cleaning up. You may even meet new friends as part of the activity.
Better yet, why not try leaving the Hummer or whatever vehicle you're driving at home for a day? Your wallet will thank you, even if no one else does.
Finally, airing up the tires on your bicycle and seeing the sights from the area trails won't impact your voter registration or negate your past Internet postings. It may even help keep you alive longer, resulting in more rebel-rousing opportunities. Pack a lunch, separate the kids from their keyboards and make a day of it.
Healthy habits, community beautification and budget monitoring aren't political. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, make 'em eat dirt.
