Casinos should join Great American Smoke Out

For several reasons, Iowa's state-regulated casinos should support the Great American Smoke Out.
In a recent story, the Journal's Des Moines bureau reported health advocates in the state have asked Iowa casinos to join in the national Smoke Out by operating smoke-free on Nov. 17. In the story, a spokesman for the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission said he doubted casinos would take part.
Our question: Why not?
First, such a decision would send the right message about the dangers of smoking.
Second, it's one day of operations. One day.
Third, it's good public relations. The Racing and Gaming Commission spokesman said smoking is a “freedom issue,” but we wish to remind him the “freedom issue” argument didn't work for the owners of private businesses (including bars and restaurants) who in 2008 were forced by the state to ban smoking on their premises. It's no exaggeration to say many Iowans feel casinos were unfairly exempted from the smoking ban.
Finally, since casinos are regulated by the state, they should feel some obligation to take this small step in support of Iowa's Healthiest State Initiative.
Taking part in the Great American Smoke Out would be a largely symbolic step for Iowa's casinos, but symbols can be positive and productive, even powerful.
It's one the casinos should take.
