A year ago, Murals & More gave birth to its first Cedar Rapids Trail of Murals project. “Entering the Eras” was created by artist Bounnak Thammavong and mounted in a space along Third Street SE, between Second and Third avenues.
In conjunction, the non-profit organization conducted its first Student Art Walk: Area students submitted artwork with the top 50 selected and reproduced on banners displayed throughout the downtown through the summer months. The second Art Walk project was unveiled April 20 at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. And a second mural is expected to be announced soon.
Murals & More is another great example of the gathering momentum toward creating more reasons to visit our community's downtown core. This all-volunteer group relies on support from individuals, businesses and organizations toward its primary mission: depict city history and culture using public art as the medium.
Engaging local youth helps spur children's interest and appreciation.
Murals & More is the brainchild of Cedar Rapidians Bob and Lynn Ocken, who were inspired by the display of murals they discovered while visiting Seward, Alaska. We salute these citizens and their group's efforts toward betterment of our community and this region.
