Watch Out for Bareheaded Nebraskans

Feb. 3, 2010 2:22 pm
I had no idea that Iowa's disregard for head injury risks/embrace of sweet, thundering freedom could be a tourism draw.
But it is. And Nebraska is envious.
The flatlanders' zanny unicameral may actually vote to repeal the state's 20-year old motorcycle helmet law. Risk-loving bikers would be required to buy long-term care insurance in exchange for going sans-helmet.
Iowa has no helmet law. And backers of a repeal in Nebraska contend the smell of freedom blowing across the Missouri River is drawing Huskers eastward, says AP:
Motorcyclist Tim Bright of Lincoln said he would be willing to pay more for the ability to ride without a helmet, which he said would keep him in Nebraska more often. Supporters of repealing the helmet requirement argue that the state is losing tax revenue and tourism because riders often bypass the state.
“Now, when I get off on the weekend, whoosh, I go to Iowa,” Bright said.
"Whoosh. I go to Iowa." Sounds like we've got our next tourism slogan.
Thanks Nebraska Tim!
Nebraska lawmakers
postponed a repeal vote today, leaving the door open to continued whooshing to Iowa when we finally thaw out.
