In heaven, there is no beer, so responsibility matters here

Jul. 17, 2012 11:30 am
I know I'm a little late to the latest skirmish over excessive tippling at the University of Iowa. I've read in the papers that Bud Light can now use the Tigerhawk logo, so long as it also says "Responsibility Matters."
But my sources close to Bud Light, actually full of Bud Light, say "Responsibility Matters" beat out some other great slogans.
A sampling:
"One Bud Light. Four at the most. Eight you're under the tailgate. Ten you're on the goalpost."
"Responsibility before Beer. You're In the Clear."
"Grab an Ice Cold Can of Caution."
"Beer Bong? Beer Wrong."
"A Sure Sign of a Safe Time."
"Hops, Hawks and Hypocrisy."
I also enjoyed this passage from a Register story last week.
Jeff Cox, a committee member who criticized the deal, also questioned the choice of Bud Light as the beverage featured in the illustrations.
“Couldn't we at least find a better beer?” Cox, a history professor, wrote in one email.
Jeff Cox, beer hero. Or maybe Beero.
I sorta wish the mighty Tigerhawk would have instead joined forces with Millstream or Peace Tree or Toppling Goliath or any of the other really great Iowa breweries that are crafting beers that rarely, if ever, get poured through a funnel into a sophomore. These are the brews that actually get enjoyed in moderation, responsibly even.
Yes, I know that's not how the big time world of big time university and big time beer marketing works. So Bud Light it is. Anyone know where I can get my 48-ounce "Responsibility Matters" keg tankard?
