Fun with archives -- 50 years after Lincoln's Gettysburg Address

Nov. 19, 2013 10:17 am
Today is the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's great speech delivered on the Gettysburg battlefield. The anniversary is getting lots of attention. And rightly so.
But I wondered how the anniversary was marked in 1913, 50 years after the speech, when many veterans of the battle were still alive and memories remained fresh.
The Evening Gazette ran the above cartoon on its front page on Nov. 19, 1913. So folks have been worried for a very long time about kids not remembering or knowing America's history.

And while I was searching, I came across this item from July 3, 1913, during the anniversary of the battle itself. Clearly, feelings about the Civil War were still raw:
I tossed in the theater ad as a little bonus. KINEMACOLOR! I'm a curious about that modern photo play entitled Religion and Gun Practice.
And, finally, here's one transcript of the Gettysburg Address from ourdocuments.gov, in case you never had to memorize it for Gettysburg Day.
