Be the Poll -- Should the merry gentlemen give it a rest?

Nov. 13, 2013 11:01 am
SiriusXM satellite radio has already devoted a channel to all Christmas music. I listened to it for a while driving home Tuesday afternoon. "Holiday Traditions," it's called. But, traditionally, I think the network's wall-to-wall audio hall-decking has commenced later in past years. Could be wrong.
So on November 12, I was treated to Lou Monte's incomparable "Dominick, the Italian Christmas Donkey." Did you know that Santa needs Dominick's help because his reindeer can't climb the hills of Italy? And all along I thought Santa's team could fly. Maybe they're just too full of cannolis to get airborne.
Wikipedia claims the song's recording was financed by the Gambino family. I was only kidding. Love the song.
I picked up Ella at daycare and informed her of this early yuletide development.
"My eyes are lighting up with excitement," she said, and I'm quoting verbatim.
Sure enough, in our minivan's "conversation mirror," I saw it clearly. Ella looked sort of like a wide-eyed cartoon mouse who just discovered the true meaning of Christmas. So heartwarming, and just a tiny bit creepy.
"Great!" I said. And I'm not laughing at you.
Who knew she was such a fan of the carols? Just least year, she confided to me that she found "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" a little "disturbing." Astute, this one.
I, too, really enjoy Christmas music, for the most part, when grandma is not being run over. Still, this seems like a gun has been jumped. We haven't even thawed the turkey.
So I thought it might be fun to take a break from our regularly scheduled bickering over various political issues to bicker over when, exactly, is it socially acceptable to start belting out the "Carol of the Bells?" So many bells. Please stop the bells.
To that end, I've devised a poll.
