Baldwin gently trashes Bernie Bros on Iowa visit

Comedian Alec Baldwin brought jokes to Iowa this week, along with a dose of blind partisan allegiance.

Baldwin's Trump impression on Saturday Night Live thrust him into political relevance over the past year. On Monday, he delivered the keynote address at the Iowa Democratic Party's annual fundraising dinner in Des Moines.

I was impressed with Baldwin's close following of the Trump administration, and his ability to correctly pronounce the names of Democrat politicians gathered for the event. However, Baldwin soured the message by injecting the kind of party-over-principle rhetoric that has become common among party elites on both sides.

A longtime Democrat, Baldwin took a subtle shot at supporters of Bernie Sanders who refused to support Hillary Clinton during the 2016 general election.

'Democrat voters have taken to picking up their ball and going home if they don't get their way,' Baldwin said. ' … If you truly believe you are a Democrat, you must come together with us now and recognize that what unites is so much more than what divides us.'

Iowans welcome jokes, but Baldwin should leave the New York partisanship at home next time.
