21-only mail call
Aug. 10, 2010 5:01 pm
I opened my mailbox at home the other day, and found this fundraising appeal from the campaign to keep Iowa City's 21-only bar ordinance on the books (don't they know journalists don't have any dimes to spare -- but that's a separate blog post):
They cite come compelling statistics, including the fact that 43 percent iof downtown ambulance calls are alcohol-related, and most of those patients are 19 years old.
Just as interesting is the list of committee co-chairs for the group, 21 Makes Sense: Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek, University of Iowa Provost Wallace Loh, UI Football Coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa legislators Joe Bolkcom, Mary Masche and Vicki Lensing, Former maroys John Balmer and Ernie Lehman, and Tom Rocklin, the UI's Vice President of Student services.
That broad support and organization shows this campaign is a whole different animal than the 2007 vote -- when UI and city leaders threw up their hands and left the organizing to the bars. But will the result change?
