CEDAR RAPIDS -- Brian Ernst is staying around cross country. Not as a coach, but as a dad.Ernst, who coached Cedar Rapids Xavier's girls to state championships in 2003 and 2006 during his 14-year tenure, confirmed that he has resigned his post."It was a difficult decision," Ernst said. "Do this for 14 years, and it's kind of like family."But his real family takes priority. His son, Braden, will run for Harding Middle School this fall."I wouldn't get to see many of his races if I continue as a high school coach, and I don't want to miss it," said Ernst, who coached elite runners in Erin Penticoff and Meaghan Nelson. "Maybe someday I'll be able to come back and help in some manner."Boys coach Nathan Hopp, who led the Saints to the 2012 state meet, also has resigned. Hopp also serves as girls track coach at Linn-Mar.Xavier Athletics Director Mike Winker said that Bryan Jones will succeed both Ernst and Hopp.Jones has been an assistant the last two seasons with the Xavier boys' and girls' track teams.
