Xavier’s McDermott an INA first-team all-state hoops player

Mar. 17, 2015 1:00 am
This was the best team Cedar Rapids Xavier has had, and it was because of guys like Adam McDermott.
The 6-foot-3 senior guard has been honored by the Iowa Newspaper Association for his outstanding play this season by being named to the Class 3A first-team all-state boys' basketball team, it has been announced.
McDermott is a University of North Dakota signee who averaged 18 points a game and shot 45.2 percent from 3-point range for the Saints, who won a school-record 18 games and finished third at the state tournament. Xavier won twice last week in Des Moines, the first two times the school has done so.
McDermott was a three-year starter, a quiet young man who let his play do his talking. Multiple times, he was asked to evaluate his individual season but would only talk about his team.
'I don't like that question,” he said, respectfully, after Xavier beat Williamsburg last Saturday in the 3A consolation game.
The winner of the 2015 Iowa Mr. Basketball award is Sioux City North's Daniel Tillo. The 6-foot-5 wing player scored 30 points in his team's first-round Class 4A state tournament loss to Iowa City West, becoming just the second Iowa prep to record 2,000 career points in the process.
Mason City's Jeff Horner is the other. Tillo, who has not made a college commitment, is the first Sioux City prep to be named Mr. Basketball since Kirk Hinrich in 1999.
Other first-team selections from the area are Spencer Haldeman of Western Dubuque (4A), Drew Cook of Iowa City Regina (2A), Devin Green of Cascade (2A) and Ethan Steinbronn of West Central (1A).
Haldeman averaged 24.3 points for Western Dubuque, which finished 19-4. The 6-foot-2 Northern Iowa signee was a second-team pick in Class 3A last season.
Cook led Regina to a runner-up finish in Class 2A. The University of Iowa football recruit averaged 22.1 points for the Regals, who lost to Treynor in last Friday's 2A championship game.
The 6-foot-5 center shot 53 percent from the field and averaged 8.6 rebounds.
Regina beat Cascade in the 2A state tournament first round. Junior center Green led the Cougars in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (7.2), shooting 57 percent from the field.
The 6-foot-10 Steinbronn helped West Central to a 21-4 record and to the Class 1A substate finals. The Upper Iowa signee averaged 22.3 points, 13.2 rebounds and just shy of five blocked shots per game.
He is UIU's all-time leading scorer.
Second-team selections include Iowa City West's David DiLeo and Linn-Mar's Jordan Bohannon in 4A, Monticello's Jarrett Easton and Matt Manternach, Anamosa's Tyler Zumbach and Clayton Ridge's Colin Connelly in 2A, and Iowa Mennonite's Eli Gingerich in 1A.
Third-teamers include Iowa City West's Connor McCaffery and Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Brendon Manning in 4A, Williamsburg's Adam Klein in 3A, Regina's Nathan Stenger in 2A and North Tama's Paul Kaufmann and Belle Plaine's Justin Jacobi in 1A.
Mr. Basketball and all of the INA all-staters are selected by a panel of the state's sportswriters, including Jeff Johnson of the Cedar Rapids Gazette.
