Xavier champs honored

CEDAR RAPIDS -- After presenting Xavier High School with its fourth girls' basketball state championship trophy, Tom Lilly led the student body in chant and dance."I believe that we just won."The Saints were honored at an assembly during first period of class Monday. Xavier defeated Harlan, 53-52, for the Class 4A championship on Saturday."It was one heck of a ride," said Lilly, who spoke about "playing for God's purpose -- to work, to believe and to engage in relationships."Athletics director Mike Winker presented the team, and captains Sarah Dickes and Kayla Armstrong addressed the student body.Dickes said, "We wouldn't be where you are without your support."Added Armstrong, the all-tournament captain: "You don't know how it really keeps us going out there."Xavier finished 17-9. Lilly moved into sole possession of the third place all-time with four championships.The team will be at The Fieldhouse on Blairs Ferry Road NE at 6:30 tonight for the On Iowa Live show on KCRG Channel 9.2.
