Williamsburg trounces Clear Creek Amana

WILLIAMSBURG - Ten scores.Williamsburg prepared for a state playoff football game with the goal of scoring 10 times. For some, it might be a lofty, unattainable for of motivation. For the Raiders, it was realization by the end of Monday night.Seventh-ranked Williamsburg racked up nine touchdowns and a field goal, trouncing Clear Creek Amana, 65-35, in the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs Monday night at Miller Field of Bob Murphy Stadium.The goal was set to earn 10 scores, which meant better execution in all phases of the game. The Raiders were dominant in all aspects of play."That's all we talked about was getting 10 scores," Williamsburg Coach Curt Ritchie said. "Thought it was crazy at the time but it was something our kids really bought into it."The Raiders dominated from the very beginning, when Austin Hilligas interceptions sandwiched a Kelly o'Rourke 11-yard touchdown run on the first three possessions of the game. Williamsburg kept rolling, scoring three times in the opening quarter and four touchdowns in the second quarter.Brett Waughop gave the Raiders a 13-0 lead with a 7-yard TD run in the first and extended it to 27-0 with a 3-yard plunge with 8:46 to go in the first half.After Clear Creek got on the board on a 76-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Villhauer to Nash Stopko, Waughop answered for the Raiders, going 57 yards on the Raiders next offensive play from scrimmage.Waughop, who only carried four times in the second half as the Raiders played reserves, rushed for 216 yards.The Raiders wanted to play more physical than in their 35-23 regular-season win over the Clippers. The running game proved it was successful."It all starts up front with the linemen," Waughop said of his performance. "They got a lot of blocks and I was able to hit the holes and get in the secondary quickly."The first half half ended in crazy fashion. Williamsburg recovered a fumble deep in Clippers territory and took over on the 20-yard line. Tyler greiner capped the 4-play drive with a 2-yard run.With less than a minute to go, Williamsburg squibbed the kickoff that Clippers players were slow to get to and the Raiders recovered on the 36 with about 14 seconds to play before the break. After an incompletion, O'Rourke hit Chance Miller on a slant pattern. Instead of hitting the dirt for a timeout and setting up a field goal, Miller broke a tackle and raced 36 yards for the score, giving Williamsburg a 48-14 halftime lead.O'Rourke hit Cody VanDee for a 15-yard TD pass to cap a 64-yard, 8-play drive to open the second half and put Williamsburg up 55-14. O'Rourke rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one, tallying 134 yards passing and 13 on the ground. A Tim Jones 41-yard field goal and a Bryan mcDonald 1-yard TD run with 9:43 to play gave Williamsburg its 10 scores."It doesn't surprise me we scored 10 tonight," Williamsburg linemen Austin Blythe said. "We played a great game. CCA has a good team. It was a good physical game and that's what we like to play."Williamsburg advances to the quarterfia Bryan McDonald 1-yard TD runnals to face Solon (10-1), which beat Grinnell, 31-7, in the second round. The Spartans beat the Raiders, 22-7, on Oct. 8. Now, they stand in the way for a trip to the UNI-Dome."It's great," Blythe said. "They handed us our only loss of the year so far.We're going to have great preparation. Solon is a great team. They play great fundamental football with good technique and well coached, so we're going to have to play like we did tonight."Clear Creek Amana played catch up all game. The pass game has been a strength for the Clippers, which kept trying to battle back. Villhauer threw for more than 350 yards and five scores, including three to Josh Rohret, who 137 yards receiving.The Clippers finish the season 6-5 and advanced to the second round by handing district champion Union its only loss of the season with a 22-15 win in the opening round.
