DYERSVILLE - Dyersville Beckman climbed out of a hole, and then ran to a win. When Mitch Steger intercepted Jake Pisarik on the final play of the came, the Blazers finished a come-from-behind 35-28 victory over Mount Vernon in a Class 2A District 4 prep football game Friday night at Beckman Field. Beckman's second straight win was powered by four second-half rushing touchdowns. The Blazers, who have produced strong passing attacks in recent years, ran for 219 yards, attempting only one pass, in the second half. The Blazers, despite only five rushing yards in the opening half, relied on the run to get them back in the game that Mount Vernon led 14-7 at the half. The deficit was erased on Beckman's opening drive of the third. Ian Ross darted off left tackle and carried a defender across the goal line on a 17-yard TD run to ignite the Blazers and tie the score at 14 apiece.Ross was a key part of the rushing attack, leading the Blazers with 96 yards on 20 carries. Kirby Kendrick and Mitch Steger added 72 and 50 yards on the ground, respectively for Beckman (2-1, 1-0 2A 4).The final quarter was all Beckman to start. Steger capped an eight-play, 57-yard drive, taking the pitch around left end and slashing his way to the end zone to put the Blazers up, 21-14, with less than 11 minutes to go.Mitch Kruse plunged in from the one yard out, giving Beckman what seemed to be a comfortable 28-14 lead with 5:51 to play, but the teams started their seesaw affair.Conner Shaffer answered for the Mustangs (1-2, 0-1). He reeled in the kickoff at the four and the bolted down the center of the field past the Blazers for a 96-yard touchdown return.Beckman quarterback Grant Hammann, who scored the game's first touchdown on a 49-yard throwback pass from Ross, gave the Blazers a lead it didn't surrender, scoring on a 14-yard run with 2:54 remaining.Mount Vernon pulled within seven again with a little more than two minutes to play when Pisarik ran for a 21-yard TD, making it 35-28. Two late interceptions by Steger and Kendrick helped seal the win for Beckman. The Mustangs pass game was productive throughout the game. Walker and Pisarik combined for 167 yards in the air with Shaffer tallying 95 yards on five catches. Jake Muller, who also notched two sacks on defense, had 47 receiving yards on three catches.Mount Vernon was solid defensively in the first half and effective in the run game. Trey Ryan put the Mustangs on the board with a 12-yard run in the first. Mount Vernon took its lead in the second when quarterback Logan Walker ran to the 2-yard line but fumbled in the end zone, which was recovered by a teammate.
