A dozen key area football games for Week 7:
IOWA CITY WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Kingston Stadium
TV: KCRG Channel 9.2
Records and rankings: Class 4A ninth-ranked West is 5-1; Kennedy is 3-3.
Notable: West is on an offensive tear. The Trojans are averaging 46 points per game, a rate that ranks second in 4A. The Trojans have won three straight by a 162-41 margin, and disassembled Cedar Rapids Xavier, 49-19, last week. Iowa State recruit Charles Rogers has passed for 1,018 yards and rushed for 477, with a combined 22 touchdowns. Kennedy has won three of its last four, and has a very good chance to win out if it can get past this hurdle. Josh Jahlas leads the Cougars in receiving yards (282) and tackles (62).
LINN-MAR at CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings: Class 4A third-rated Linn-Mar is 6-0 overall, 4-0 MVC Mississippi Division; Washington is 4-2, 2-2.
Notable: After feasting against 4A's easiest schedule thus far (the first six opponents had a combined record of 8-28), Linn-Mar's degree of difficulty goes up dramatically in the final three weeks. It starts Friday against a Washington team that shocked Iowa City High, 27-24, last week, ending the Little Hawks' 33-game winning streak. The Lions have outscored their opposition by an average of 42.7-11.2. Mark Atwater has completed 67 percent of his passes for 16 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Washington's Flynn Heald still ranks second in 4A in receptions (49) and receiving yards (761).
DUBUQUE WAHLERT at IOWA CITY HIGH
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
Records and rankings: Wahlert is 4-2 overall, 3-1 MVC Mississippi Division; Class 4A fifth-ranked City High is 5-1, 3-1.
Notable: For the first time in nearly four years, the Little Hawks are coming off an MVC loss. Cedar Rapids Washington ended City's 33-game league win streak, 27-24, last week. City can set up a critical divisional game with Linn-Mar next week if it gets past the Golden Eagles, who have quietly put together a nice season. City's Ronald Thompson ranks second in 4A in rushing at 1,219 yards. Wahlert's Riley McCarron is tied for the 4A lead in interceptions, with five.
WATERLOO EAST at CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
Records and rankings: East is 4-2 overall, 3-2 MVC Valley Division; Xavier is 3-3, 2-2.
Notable: An MVC doormat in recent years, East has been the feel-good story of the past month. The Trojans have won four straight games, though those wins came against teams with a combined one victory. Xavier's schedule has been much more difficult lately, and three straight losses (against Iowa City High, Cedar Falls and Iowa City West) has been the result. Xavier's Carter Valentine has rushed for 700 yards. East's Desmond Van Arsdale has rushed for 604 yards and passed for 598.
CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
Records and rankings: Jefferson is 0-6 overall, 0-3 MVC Valley Division; Prairie is 0-6, 0-4.
Notable: Somebody's going to pick up their first win in the annual Cedar Rapids' west-side "Kolache Bowl." Will it be the first victory for Prairie and Coach Mike Morrissey? Or will Jefferson put a 19-game losing streak to bed? Prairie has been the more competitive team, dropping three of its six contests by two touchdowns or less. Jefferson has been held to 10 points or less on five occasions.
DE WITT CENTRAL at MARION
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Thomas Park Field
Records and rankings: Central is 2-4 overall, 2-2 Class 3A District 5; Marion is 4-2, 2-2.
Notable: The Indians' playoff hopes haven't yet reached critical condition, but last week's 24-19 loss to previously winless Center Point-Urbana did put Marion in a bind. It's likely that Marion will need two wins in the final three weeks to reach the postseason, and Union and Maquoketa are up next. Colton Storla has rushed for 846 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Indians own the top 3A individual in interceptions (Hunter Banes, with six) and fumble recoveries (Devin LeBeau, with seven).
IOWA CITY REGINA at DURANT
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Durant
Records and rankings: Top-ranked Regina is 6-0 overall, 4-0 Class 2A District 5; Durant is 1-5, 1-3.
Notable: Regina's race through the regular season ought to continue Friday. The Regals lead 2A in scoring defense at 5 points per game, and are scoring at a healthy 43.2-point clip. Regina is averaging 9.8 yards per play from scrimmage, led by Jacob Vollstedt's 704 yards and 13 touchdowns. Vollstedt also leads the defense with 40 tackles. Durant has dropped its last three games (against West Liberty, Camanche and Wilton) by a 147-8 margin.
LONE TREE at LISBON
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Lisbon
Records and rankings: Both teams are 6-0 overall, 3-0 Class A District 5. Lisbon is ranked second; Lone Tree is No. 3.
Notable: Two small schools; one BIG game. Both packs of Lions have devoured everything in sight. Lisbon leads Class A in offense (50.2 ppg) and defense (2.7 ppg), and has outscored its first A-5 foes by the tune of 208-8. Lone Tree has been just as forceful, averaging 49 points per game and allowing 7.5. Friday's visitors have already defeated two quality Class A schools (WACO and BGM) while Lisbon has an 18-8 victory over 1A West Branch on its resume. Lone Tree's balanced rushing attack nets 346 ground yards per game -- Levi Reitzler has 538 yards and eight touchdowns. Lisbon's Tait Simpson has rushed for 415 yards and 11 TDs.
WEST DELAWARE at WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Waverly
Records and rankings: Ninth-ranked West Delaware is 5-1 overall, 4-0 Class 3A District 4; No. 5 WSR is 6-0, 4-0.
Notable: West Delaware is among a smattering of teams statewide that already has a playoff berth in its belt, and the Hawks can take control of the district race with a road win. Sam Lahr has rushed for 858 yards while Trey McTaggart has added 587 yards on the ground and 847 in the air. Jake Englin has rushed for 539 yards to lead WSR. These teams were part of a three-way tie for the district title (along with Decorah) last year.
SOLON at WILLIAMSBURG
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Williamsburg
Records and rankings: Seventh-rated Solon is 5-1 overall, 4-0 Class 3A District 6; Williamsburg is 5-1, 3-1.
Notable: The 3A-6 race is boiling into a three-team affair, and two of the contenders square off in Williamsburg. Solon's string of 33 straight district wins is the second-longest active streak in Iowa (Council Bluffs St. Albert has won 38 straight), and the Spartans haven't been severely pushed in league play yet this season. Williamsburg provides a stern test; the Raiders have won two straight convincingly after stumbling against Grinnell in Week 4. Solon QB J.J. Hanus has passed for 448 yards and rushed for a team-high 424.
STARMONT at TURKEY VALLEY
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Jackson Junction
Records and rankings: Tenth-rated Starmont is 6-0 overall, 4-0 Class 1A District 5; Turkey Valley is 4-2, 3-1.
Notable: Unbeaten Starmont faces its toughest three challenges of the season in the final three weeks, starting with a Turkey Valley squad that stumbled, 29-28, last week against Bellevue. Starmont's Vincent Otdoerfer is second in Class 1A in rushing at 1,173 yards, and has scored 18 touchdowns. TV's Jordan Mitchell has rushed for 576 yards. Both teams are among the top seven offensive teams in 1A; Starmont is scoring 40.3 points per game; Turkey Valley 38.7.
UNION at WESTERN DUBUQUE
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Epworth
Records and rankings: Union is 4-2 overall, 2-2 Class 3A District 5; Western Dubuque is 5-1, 4-0.
Notable: Western Dubuque seems to be gaining more steam as each week passes. After dropping the opener to Dyersville Beckman, the Bobcats edged West Delaware and Marion and now carry a five-game win streak into their most crucial stretch of the season. The 'Cats host Union Friday, then travel to Maquoketa next week in what will probably amount to a district-title game. Logan Pitz has caught 23 passes for 482 yards. Union's Wes Burnside has been limited somewhat by hamstring issues, yet has rushed for 720 yards and 14 TDs.
ALSO ON TELEVISION:
MFL MarMac (1-5 overall, 1-3 Class 2A District 4) at Dyersville Beckman (5-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. Friday, KCRG Channel 9.2
