Complete Week 3 schedule HERE
The area's top dozen football games for Week 3:
WATERLOO EAST at CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-2.
Notable: Jefferson is saddled with a 15-game losing streak, and this probably is the J-Hawks' best opportunity of the season to snap it. The J-Hawks have been outscored by a combined 70-16 in their first two games against Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Washington, but have showed some promise. Kyle Mann scored the J-Hawks' touchdown last week, in the fourth quarter. East was competitive for a while against Cedar Falls last week before falling, 41-6.
IOWA CITY WEST at IOWA CITY HIGH
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Stadium
Records and rankings: Both teams are 2-0. West is ranked ninth in Class 4A; City High is No. 2.
Notable: City High has won seven straight in this series, including a 41-21 victory last year at West, in which Ronald Thompson ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns. Thompson ran for 115 yards last week in the Little Hawks' 52-13 rout of Waterloo West. The Trojans should be competitive with the Little Hawks this year; they have skill personnel galore. West has scored 97 points in its first two games. Charles Rogers has rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns, and has passed for 257 yards and four TDs.
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium (Kennedy is the home team and its fans will sit on the west side)
Records and rankings: Washington is 2-0; Kennedy is 0-2.
Notable: Two weeks ago, it seemed the Warriors were the team with more concerns. But they have exploded offensively to the tune of 43 points per game. Flynn Heald has become one of the state's top receivers; he has 15 catches for 318 yards already, with four touchdowns. Kennedy has suffered on both sides of the ball; the Cougars have been outscored 70-14 in losses to Cedar Rapids Xavier and Linn-Mar, and it's looking like a repeat of last year, when Kennedy opened 1-4 before hitting its stride.
LINN-MAR at DUBUQUE WAHLERT
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque
Records and rankings: Both teams are 2-0. Linn-Mar is ranked eighth in Class 4A.
Notable: This is Linn-Mar's lone journey out of the Cedar Rapids/Marion Metro area of the season. Andy Henry provided quite an opening moment in the first game at Linn-Mar Stadium last week, returning the opening kickoff 95 yards in what became a 42-14 rout of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Henry had three receiving TDs the previous week against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Wahlert is 2-0, with wins over Waterloo West and Dubuque Senior, but this will be a large step up in competition for the Golden Eagles.
CEDAR FALLS at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
Records and rankings: Cedar Falls (2-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A; Prairie is 0-2.
Notable: Prairie's brutal early-season schedule gets even more difficult this week. The Hawks' score-but-can't-stop-them issue in a 51-26 Week 1 loss to Cedar Rapids Washington morphed the other way last week, when they fell to Cedar Rapids Xavier, 14-0. The Hawks drove to the Xavier 1 early in the game before fumbling it away. Prairie's Demetrius Harper has suffered a broken collarbone and will miss most -- if not all -- of the rest of the season. Cedar Falls' Barkley Hill already has 420 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER at DUBUQUE HEMPSTEAD
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque
Records and rankings: Xavier (2-0) is ranked No. 10 in Class 4A; Hempstead is 0-2.
Notable: Two games, no points. That's what the Xavier defense has allowed. The Saints blanked Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the opener, then did likewise to Cedar Rapids Prairie in Week 2. Carter Valentine has developed in to the Saints' workhorse on the ground, accumulating 312 yards -- 8.0 yards per carry. Reggie Schulte has been efficient, completing 23 of 35 passes for 262 yards with three touchdowns and just one interception. This is the third straight top-10 opponent for Hempstead, which has lost to Cedar Falls and Iowa City West.
MARION at WESTERN DUBUQUE
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Epworth
Records and rankings: Marion is 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 3A District 5; Western Dubuque is 1-1, 0-0.
Notable: The Indians sit on the cusp of the 3A rankings as they begin their journey into district play. It starts with a challenge at Epworth against a team that tripped up West Delaware on the road last week. The Bobcats managed just 152 yards of offense, but built a pair of 10-point leads and held off the Hawks. Marion is 2-0, but a bit banged up. The Indians got a pair of early interceptions by Hunter Banes that helped them build a big lead and beat Benton Community.
WILTON at IOWA CITY REGINA
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Regina
Records and rankings: Wilton is 1-1 overall, 0-0 Class 2A District 5; Top-ranked Regina is 2-0, 0-0.
Notable: Wilton provided the biggest challenge in Regina's run to the 2010 district title -- if you want to call it that. Regina's 41-6 win over the Beavers was the Regals' closest call. The Regals have pushed together 16 consecutive wins, including a 35-9 domination of four-time defending state champion Solon last week. Jacob Vollstedt has rushed for 270 yards, an average of 11.3 per carry. Wilton did knock off formerly ranked Sigourney-Keota, 45-21, last week.
CEDAR VALLEY CHRISTIAN at MIDLAND
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Wyoming, Iowa
Records and rankings: Cedar Valley Christian is 0-2; Midland is 3-0.
Notable: Midland's Ryan Leonard is the state's second-leading rusher, though admittedly, he's a game up on most guys. Leonard has rushed for 631 yards on 70 carries and has reached the end zone nine times. Midland is a win away from reaching its win total from a year ago, and two wins from its first winning season since 1994. Cedar Valley Christian begins the second half of its abbreviated schedule before completing it in two weeks at Central City. The Huskies were beaten 66-28 last week at Dunkerton.
NORTH FAYETTE at DYERSVILLE BECKMAN
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Dyersville
Records and rankings: North Fayette is 1-1 overall, 0-0 Class 2A District 4; Beckman (2-0, 0-0) is ranked No. 3.
Notable: Just a bit of the luster got chipped off this matchup when North Fayette fell to Oelwein last week, but this game still probably represents a championship matchup of 2A District 4. Beckman's Conner Golden has passed for seven touchdowns, including five in a 41-7 triumph over Center Point-Urbana last week. North Fayette's Jake Greco has rushed for 335 yards on 58 carries. The Hawks are 48-1 in district play since 2004.
LONE TREE at WACO
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Wayland
Records and rankings: Ninth-ranked Lone Tree is 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class A District 5. So is fifth-rated WACO.
Notable: Lone Tree has stood up and given notice that it intends to make the A-5 race more than the projected two-team fight between reigning champion WACO and Lisbon, and the Lions can put their plan into action Friday. They have outscored their first two opponents by a combined 97-13, with eight different running backs scoring at least one touchdown. Justin Freyenberger leads WACO with 344 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
OELWEIN at DECORAH
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Decorah
Records and rankings: Oelwein is 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 3A District 4; Decorah is 1-1, 0-0.
Notable: Oelwein's blitz-on-every-play mentality paid off in a 26-20 upset win over North Fayette last week. Stephen Meyer's 12-yard touchdown pass to Cody Rath with 4 minutes left accounted for the winning touchdown. Meyer has accumulated 499 yards -- 192 rushing and 307 passing. A co-champion in 3A-4 last year (along with Waverly-Shell Rock and West Delaware), Decorah rebounded from a Week 1 loss with a convincing win over New Hampton.
