Watch: Monticello's Melchert pulls away for 2A record, title
DES MOINES -- Monticello's Michael Melchert set a 2A state-meet record in the 3200 meter run on Thursday afternoon, pulling away from the field for a 9:17.69 finish.
Melchert, a senior, ran neck-and-neck for the first mile with Northeast GL's Eli Kaczinski. But as the second mile began, he started to pull away. As the public address announcer told the crowd that they had a chance to witness a fifth state record on the day, many rose to their feet for Melchert's final lap.
Kaczinski placed second in 9:32.95, and North Polk's Peter Smith took third in 9:40.12.
