Dec. 17, 2010 5:02 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Frank Howell has won a lot of games in his eight-year tenure as girls' basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington, but this group of Warriors is trying to help him accomplish a first."We want to be the first team Coach Howell has coached here that has gone to the Christmas break undefeated," said Wash's Jazz Royster. "There's one to go."Class 4A fifth-ranked Washington moved to 8-0 last night with a 71-42 throttling of Cedar Rapids Jefferson at the Warrior gym. To going into the holidays perfect, the Warriors need to win Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The way these girls are playing, that's a pretty good bet."I was very, very pleased overall tonight," Howell said. "There were a lot of things I thought we did well."Creating turnovers being at the top of the list. Wash's full-court, trapping defense forced a whopping 38 miscues by Jefferson (3-5), which led to a plethora of easy buckets. It was 25-12 Washington after a quarter and 40-20 at halftime. Guard Janay Pritchett led the way with a team-high 18 points off the bench, a sign of this team's depth.Going into Friday, only center Tia Dawson was averaging double figures in scoring, and that was right at 10.0 points per game. Taylor Jacobson led Jeff with 18 points."Everybody can score," said Royster, who added 13 points. "It's not one specific person getting points.""We beat Dubuque Wahlert the other night by 13 and didn't have one player in double figures," Howell said. "We're getting it from multiple places."Here is the game boxscore:
