Wamac Tournament

Below is a paraphrased report from former Marion state champion Aaron Conway who submitted updates from Maquoketa:

Big matches throughout the tournament. Western Dubuque's Jim Gotto handled Zeb Light, who had beaten Gotto twice this year, in the 119-pound final. Mount Vernon had a champ at 125 when Eyasu Russell countered a late takedown attempt by Marion's Austin Weisinger to break a 4-4 tie and win 6-4.

West Delaware's Nathan Vaske won by fall over Maquoketa's Tim O'Connell at 130. Vaske reached a big milestone, becaoming a four-time Wamac conference champ (I believe he joins the Hawks' Kalen Lenz and Zach McCool).

Exciting match at 140 where Brett Yonkovic of West Delaware beat Mount Vernon's David Zacharakis-Jutz with a takedown in overtime. Zacharakis-Jutz had a go-behind and it looked as if it were in; Referees awarded the takedown and then waved it off after conferring. Similar situation occurred in OT with Yonkovic on the offensive side. Supporting points were out, but he was awarded a takedown.

West Delaware's Chris Ketchum overcame an early 4-point move by Cam Savage of CPU for a 6-5 win at 145.

Alex Conway scored a 5-2 win over Waterloo Columbus' Will Hansen at 152, which had 14 wrestlers with winning records. Conway also had a 12-point win over a quality kid from Mount Vernon in the semis.

Blake Bagby of Independence beat Maquoketa's Thomas Mayberry in the finals at 160 -  a tough bracket with four ranked wrestlers. Bagby defeated Western Dubuque's Cody Schmitt in the semis; Mayberry beat Marion's Curtis Ette, leading by a point before cinching up a nearside cradle for a fall. Ette bounced back for third, pounding Schmitt before getting a pin.

Carl Broghammer of West Delaware held off Casey Kreiter of DeWitt Central, 6-5, in the 189-pound final. Kreiter tossed Broghammer to his back as time ran out. Kreiter beat Benton Community's Jordan Kaiser in the semis to advance. 

Williamsburg sophomore Austin Blythe pinned West Delaware's Nick Trenkamp in 27 seconds. Blythe is an animal.
