Seedorff Gymnasium filled quickly with pink shirts last night for a Breast Cancer Awareness volleyball match at West Delaware High School in Manchester as No. 2 Solon and No. 4 West Delaware squared off with a Wamac East title on the line.
West Delaware (27-3, 7-0) prevailed in four sets, 25-19, 25-20, 26-28, 25-15, to claim that divisional crown.
The Hawks were led by senior Paige Soppe with 14 kills. Sophomore Carlee Ketchum contributed 36 assists on the night.
'It was amazing to beat Solon,' Soppe said. 'It was one of our team's greatest accomplishments so far this season.'
Solon (17-2, 6-1) was led by junior Jordan Smith, who tallied 16 kills. Junior Taylor Nearad recorded 43 assists.
'Solon's big hitters were unstoppable at times,' said West Delaware Coach Brett Mather. 'We tried to dig some up, but they are (among) the best hitters in the state.'
Mather couldn't have been prouder of how his team performed in a championship atmosphere.
'We played with energy, excitement and solid defense,' he said. 'It's been a major goal of ours to win a Wamac title. It took several years to accomplish. I'm just extremely proud of how the girls played tonight.'
