Visualization and Elvis…

It was a very good weekend for two great friends, who both had great races. One finished the Disney World Marathon (his last…maybe) with a sub-4 time, and the other finished her first 5K (also at Disney) and had a lot of fun. Am very proud of both!

My weekend was uninteresting, at best. So much so, that I struggled trying to think of something to write about.
I thought about grabbing a last minute flight down to Orlando to support my friends, but then looked at my schedule for the next four months. I was reminded about how much traveling I have in front of me. So, I made the decision to simply relax and hangout…much of it done in my sister training town, Iowa City. (View small number of pics above…)
I could tell you about the two really bad movies that I rented – one filled with violence and political agenda, and the other filled with bad comedy. Sound pretty much like every movie that's made, these days?
Or I could tell you about my first ever late night trip to a Wal-Mart, where I saw Elvis disguised as an employee named Dave, and where I was approached by a fellow shopper who asked, “Do you know where the toilet seats are?” It seemed to be a trick question.
I could also tell you about stopping by Barnes and Noble, picking up the latest Marathon & Beyond Magazine and Michael Crichton's book “Pirate Latitudes” – two great choices.
I did spend a good amount of time reading but also did quite a bit of visualizing. Yes, I do visualize.
In less than a week my racing season begins. Originally, it was going to be at Knox College but was informed that the meet will not have a 600 meters, this year. Therefore, I will be heading north to the University of Northern Iowa, where I will be rekindling some old memories, get to hang out with my friend Bri, and hopefully walk away from the track feeling good about my race.
Wanting to get in a 400 along with the 6, I was slightly concerned with the less than one-hour rest time that I had in-between. That's when I thought about maybe replacing the 4 with a 1000, which is close to three hours before the 6. My senses came through and have decided to keep my first meet with a 600, and that alone. In years past, I would go all in and try to triple, but the season is long and staying healthy is first and foremost on my list.
I visualized my warm-up (I've done it many times over the years). I visualized running well (for me, anyway). I visualized a 1:27 and being satisfied. I visualized ice on my feet and burning lungs. I visualized a smile on my face.
My next entry will have all of the details of that race, down to the sweat and breath. Let the fun begin…
