Video: Schwab discusses taking over UNI job

May. 13, 2010 4:10 pm
Doug Schwab seemed a tad bit nervous Thursday when he addressed the media and wrestling supporters at a news conference introducing him as the new head wrestling coach for the UNI Panthers. Schwab passed with flying colors, interjecting some one-liners, showing excitement and an appreciation for the storied program.
Schwab could be the perfect person to re-energize the Panther program.
Expect the attitude in the UNI wrestling room to change. Schwab wants to change the mindset that it's not just winning, but how the wrestlers win. You know, the Iowa style that Schwab practiced as a three-time All-American for the Hawkeyes, and that he preached as an assistant for the Hawkeyes the last four years. That be aggressive, build leads, and battle until the final whistle mentality.
The position is a bit of a homecoming for Schwab, who is an Osage native (a 1996 state champion). His older brothers, Mark and Mike, were for UNI wrestlers. He talked briefly about being a kid and throwing a tennis ball and chasing it around the West Gym.
I asked what he thought about the all the attention he faced during the hiring process and what he thought about having to deal with it as a head coach. I also asked if he had a chance to soak up the realization that the UNI program was now "his".
