The buzz at the McLeod Center was even more than probably expected when UNI introduced Doug Schwab as the new head wrestling coach in a Thursday press conference. Schwab, a former University of Iowa assistant the last four seasons, takes over for Bran Penrith, who was let go in April after 10 seasons as Panthers head coach.
Jarion Beets, a former Cedar Rapids Kennedy prep, was the lone All-American for UNI at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Beets discussed what Schwab brings to the table, how the last month has been while the wrestlers have been in limbo waiting for the finalization of the coaching change and how he and the team will benefit frokm Schwab's hire.
At the press conference, Schwab discussed his coaching staff. The first piece to the puzzle will be his older brother, Mark, who will take over the role as top assistant. Randy Pugh, a former UNI wrestler and an assistant for Penrith, will be retained as an assistant. Schwab also grabbed the attention of those at the press conference, saying he is interested in bringing in former Hawkeyes Daniel Dennis and Ryan Morningstar to assume a position with the program. Dennis and Morningstar were seniors this last season, wrestling 133 and 165 pounds, respectively.
Mark Schwab ceratinly is a good pick. Schwab, a two-time All-American for the Panthers from 1986-90 who set an NCAA record with 49 wins as a freshman, has been an established and highly-regarded coach. Most notably, Schwab was an assistant at the University of Minnesota for nine season, helping the Golden Gophers to two national titles and seven finishes in the top three at the national tournament. He has also been a head coach at Buena Vista University and NIACC.
Schwab, an assistant at UNI for the 1990-91 season, talks about a returning to Cedar Falls and what characteristics make Doug a Division I coach.
