Union, Cedar Rapids Jefferson close competition at The Clash

Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Union Community closed their weekend with wins.
The J-Hawks and Knights competed in The Clash dual wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Rochester, Minn.
Jefferson finished sixth in its bracket competition the first day and placed third in the sixth bracket to cap its experience. The J-Hawks defeated Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, 36-23, sandwiched between losses to Hastings (Minn.), 42-17, and Hononegah (Ill.), 35-24, Friday.
Jefferson dropped to close duals to the Minneota (Minn.) Vikings and Parkston (S.D.) Trojans. Minneota won, 38-36, and Parkston survived, 36-31, with both teams posting pins in the final bout against the J-Hawks. Jefferson rebounded with a 40-36 victory over Jackson County Central (Minn.), getting pins from Erik Hovey (220) and heavyweight Dalton Kuehl in the last two matches.
Union, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, went 4-2 overall. After losing its opening dual of the tournament, the Knights stormed back to place fifth in its bracket with a 35-24 win over Wasatch (Utah) and beat Minneota, 34-27, on Friday.
The Knights continued its win streak with a 38-31 win over Hononegah to begin the second day. Prior Lake (Minn.) edged Union, 32-31, winning on criteria before the Knights beat Grand Island (Neb.), 37-30.
Bettendorf was also part of five Iowa teams in the 32-team field. The Bulldogs won the 'D” bracket Friday. Bettendorf finished fourth overall, dropping all three duals in Saturday's championship bracket.
