Quarterback Terrell Rennie carried 19 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns and David Johnson added a pair of scoring runs to lead Northern Iowa to a 34-23 win over Stephen F. Austin last night in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The Panthers (1-1) took control in the third quarter. With the game tied 13-13, Rennie scored on a 20-yard run.
After the Jacks came back with a field goal, Johnson scored his second TD on the first play of the fourth quarter.
After SFA (1-1) cut the margin to 27-23, Rennie sealed the victory with a 9-yard scoring run with 3:10 remaining.
OLIVET-NAZARENE 16, COE 10 (OT) - At Bourbonnais, Ill., after rallying from a 10-0 deficit to force overtime, Coe needed just a field goal to win when Ernie Esparza intercepted a Brad Boyle pass and took it 92 yards for the winning score.
The Kohawks (0-2) scored 10 fourth quarter points to tie then held Olivet to a 53-yard field goal attempt in overtime that sailed wide.
Boyle completed 21 of 40 passes for 200 yards, but was intercepted four times.
MINNESOTA-DULUTH 49, UPPER IOWA 22 - At Duluth, Minn., the defending NCAA Division II national champions won their 31st straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game by downing the Peacocks in their home opener.
For Upper Iowa (1-1, 0-1), freshman Chris Smith carried 15 times for 133 yards.
WILLIAM PENN 24, LUTHER 13 - At Decorah, Chris Crawford's 49-yard punt return early in the fourth quarter put the game away for the visiting Statesmen (3-0).
Luther's scores came on a 63-yard fumble return from Obi Ukabiala late in the first half and a fourth quarter, 16-yard pass from Chris Reynolds to Steven Thompson.
Kyle McGivney and Trent Kerrigan each had 18 tackles for the Norse (0-2).
