CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (17-5) vs. NORTH SCOTT (21-1)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Clinton
Scouting Report: Similar teams in their approach and style. Not particularly large physically but attack and 3-point oriented. Kennedy has been led all season by senior guard A.J. Carter, who averages 15.6 points per game. He also has a stellar assist-to-turnover ratio of three to one (35 turnovers, 107 steals). Kennedy's five losses were to teams all playing in substate finals, including twice to Linn-Mar. Third-ranked North Scott's lone loss was to No. 2 Bettendorf, 60-42, in late January. The Lancers have a Division I college talent in 6-foot-5 junior Cortez Seales, who leads his team in scoring (16.5 ppg) and rebounds (6.2). Guards Marlon Stewart, Grant Graham and Trey Kilburg all have attempted at least 87 3-pointers this season. Kennedy was last at the state tournament in 2008, North Scott in 2003.
LINN-MAR (13-9) vs. DUBUQUE SENIOR (21-1)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Dubuque Hempstead
Scouting Report: Can the Lions slay the mighty No. 1 Rams? On paper, the matchup is not favorable for Linn-Mar, an undersized team facing a starting lineup that includes two players who are 6-foot-9, one who is 6-7 and another who is 6-5. The teams met very early in the regular season, with Senior winning at Linn-Mar, 66-41. Senior's lone loss was to Chicago Heights (Ill.) Marian Catholic, 68-61. Linn-Mar will go as far as guards Jordan Bohannon and Nic Uhlir will take them. Sophomore Bohannon averages 17.6 points, junior Uhlir 14.9, and they have combined to take 262 3-pointers. Point guard Kyle Haber has had a brilliant senior season, the Brown University recruit averaging 19.6 points for Senior. He shoots 53 percent from the field, 47 percent from the 3-point line and 84 percent from the free-throw line.
IOWA CITY WEST (19-3) vs. IOWA CITY HIGH (11-11)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Cedar Rapids Prairie
Scouting Report: Fourth-ranked West walloped City High twice in the regular season, 70-34 and 73-41. The Trojans are two-time defending 4A state champs, led by Northern Iowa signee Wyatt Lohaus (19.8 ppg, 56 FG pct.). He also leads his team in rebounding and is a close second in assists. West's three losses have come to Dubuque Senior, Dubuque Wahlert and Minneapolis (Minn.) DeLaSalle in overtime. Perhaps City High's best chance is to take the air out of the ball and try and shorten the game. Guard LaDarius Taylor is the only Little Hawk who scores in double figures (11.6 ppg). City High has not been to the state tournament since 2008. West has qualified four of the last five years.
