Top-ranked tussles highlight quarterfinals

DES MOINES - The quarterfinal rounds of the Iowa High School Athletic Association state wrestling were well worth the price of eight dollars to attend and take a seat.The second round feature five total matchups between No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in all three classes Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. Classes 1A and 2A had two apiece with one in 3A. The No. 1-ranked wrestlers went 3-2, including two overtime wins.The first featured a rematch of a 2A state finals contest between Center Point-Urbana's top-ranked 113-pound sophomore Brock Rathbun and West Delaware's No. 2 Pat Woods, who pinned Rathbun in the 106 finals last year. Rathbun, who won in the Wamac Conference final, scored a takedown with one second remaining in the third and countered Woods' attempt for the decisive takedown in sudden victory."I was going for the takedown," Rathbun said. "I wasn't looking at the clock. It was great."Shortly after Davenport Assumption's Brendan Gould earned one for the lower ranked wrestlers. The second-ranked Knight beat Washington's returning state champion and top-ranked Fletcher Green, 5-0, at 120 pounds in 2A.“He's been at the top of the rankings all year, but I don't let that get to my head,” Gould said. “To me, rankings mean nothing. Anybody can be beaten, and I proved that.”At 126 in 3A, Mason City's top-ranked Kaz Onoo used a reversal in the last 30-second tiebreaker period to hold off Iowa City West's Chris Walters, 3-2.Clarion-Goldfield's second-ranked Josh Portillo handed Highland's top-ranked Bryce West just his second loss of the season. Portillo scored seven points, getting a takedown and three nearfall off a tilt, for a 9-6 victory in the 113-pound quarterfinals in 1A.In the biggest hyped match of the day, Lisbon's top-ranked Carter Happel pinned Alburnett's No. 2 Hunter Washburn in 3:58 in a battle of 1A state champions at 132.
