Iowa is changing its decals today. Here's the release from UI sports info.
IOWA HELMET HONORS MILITARY
The University of Iowa football team has changed its helmet decals for today's game in honor of members of the military and Veterans Day.
Iowa's black helmet features the Iowa tigerhawk logo on the right temple, in red, white, and blue, and not the normal gold color. This logo is in recognition of men and women, in all branches of the military around the world, who are serving, or have served, their country. The right side of the helmet will, as usual, include the ANF (America Needs Farmers) logo above the tigerhawk.
The left side of the helmet does not include the tigerhawk logo. It was removed in honor of all men and women of all branches of the military who gave their lives in the line of duty.
The 10th-ranked Hawkeyes play at Indiana today at 2:30 p.m. (CT). ESPN is televising the contest.
- The QBs were on the field. The two true freshmen - Ryan Boyle and Drew Cook - made the road trip.
CJ Beathard was out and doing the warmup things, wearing sweats and, for the first time, a glove on his left hand.
- I would put backup OLB Bo Bower in the iffy category. He's getting the extra pregame stretch by strength coach Chris Doyle. That always means game-time decision. Bower would be a big loss. He's in the heart of special teams and is one of three rushers in Iowa's raider package.
- Odd collection of defensive backs out on the field warming up. Corners Desmond King, Joshua Jackson and Maurice Fleming were joined by strong safety Miles Taylor.
Remember last week, senior free safety Jordan Lomax was a game-time decision. I think he'll be out there, but he's not right now.
- All four running backs are here. From the looks of it, I think senior Jordan Canzeri will give it a try. He was out and did everything you do when you have the intention of playing the game.
- All the tight ends you'd think would make the trip made the trip. You're going to ask about senior Jake Duzey. He suffered a torn patellar tendon on the second-to-last practice of spring. That's a tough injury to bounce back from in this short amount of time. I think what you see is what you get with him. I don't think he'll be 100 percent this season. The good news is that junior George Kittle has emerged. He's Iowa's best TE right now.
- The WRs who made the trip: Matt VandeBerg, Tevaun Smith, Jacob Hillyer, Jerminic Smith, Adrian Falconer, Riley McCarron and Andrew Stone.
- It's a nice day here. A little win, maybe. Nothing whipping. Kicker Marshall Koehn just tried a 52-yarder that was a little wide left and short. The backup kicker again is redshirt freshman Miguel Recinos. No, I'm not going to ask Ferentz after the game about Mick Ellis.
Koehn hit a pair of 48-yarders going the other way.
- Returners are out on the field. Canzeri is out on the field with the other returners (Parker, King, McCarron and VandeBerg).
I think he's playing.
- OT Ike Boettger is in uniform and warming up. He suffered a high-ankle sprain against Illinois. So, progress there. We'll see if he plays.
- Remember DE Nate Meier leaving late in last week's game and then doing postgame with his left arm in a sling? He's out there and not wearing any shoulder contraption.
- All defensive starters are in place. It's everyone you'd think it'd be.
- Backup OL from R to L: Keegan Render, James Daniels, Eric Simmons, Steve Ferentz, Dalton Ferguson (that's a new one and over Ryan Ward).
- Backup DL: Matt Nelson, Faith Ekakitie, Kyle Terlouw and Bud Spears.
OK, Iowa is in the lockerroom. Kickoff is 2:35.
