I don't expect WR Tevaun Smith to play today. I'm not sure the extent of his injury, likely a knee. He didn't practice early in the week. From what I've been told true freshman Jerminic Smith will get the call.
As for left tackle Boone Myers, he also likely out this week. You saw he left in the first quarter against North Texas last week. He has a stinger. He sat on the bench with ice on his neck. Junior Cole Croston took the reps in practice.
This is an interesting matchup. Croston will be taking on either Joe Schobert or Vince Biegel, the Badgers' star outside linebacker. They are pass rush rangers and just really great athletes.
- The quarterbacks are out. It's chilly here in Madison. Bright, sunny morning. All the tight ends are out.
Three receivers are out - Jacob Hillyer, Riley McCarron and Andrew Stone. Another wave: Jerminic Smith, Matt VandeBerg and Adrian Falconer.
- OK, other injuries: Not sure on CB Greg Mabin (leg strain), but I think he plays. I saw him Tuesday. He seemed fine.
Don't know on safety Miles Taylor (leg strain).
- Running back LeShun Daniels is on the field doing all the things he's done the last few weeks, He has an ankle injury, but I think he's close to 100 percent. I think his contributions will be a big deal for Iowa today.
Be back with more updates.
- The amalgam of sources I've heard from on Smith keep coming back to a knee injury that will keep him out a couple of weeks. I probably won't be able to confirm that until later this morning or after the postgame.
- Iowa sports info tweeted that Smith, Myers and RB Derrick Mitchell are out today. All injury related, they said. Mitchell did have a high-ankle sprain during camp. Maybe he's not all the way back from that. Maybe it's something new.
- Here's what we know about Cole Croston: You've heard the name. Since, someone emailed me that Croston nearly had his arm ripped off going up for a rebound against Adam Woodbury in high school. They did play against each other in the Sioux City area. Both are big dudes, now and then.
- Iowa specialists are out.
- Hearing sprained knee for Smith and it might be a couple of weeks. Myers has the stinger/neck/shoulder thing. Has a chance to be back next week.
- Here's the recruiting pieces I wrote on Smith and Falconer.
Iowa recruiting coordinator/assistant coach Seth Wallace on J Smith: 'He's a true wide receiver, not that the other two aren't. Ogwo has national speed. Falconer is just a hard-nosed, tough wide receiver. Jerminic is more of a true wide receiver. We had to fight like hell for him. There were a lot of schools that had interest in him late. Great route runner, he's got good size.”
Wallace on Falconer: 'I would disagree with you. I know it's been said in the past that Florida is an area we've dropped out of. [Running backs coach] Chris White has some ties down there with this brother being at Florida. We've obviously got some connections down there. Adrian is someone, to be honest with you, who paid out of his own pocket, he and his mother, to come up here during the summer. We've found the recruiting calendar is moving faster and faster and decisions will be made earlier, but he did make the effort to come up here when we certainly couldn't pay for it. It showed us, at that point and time, that he had some investment in us. He's a fast kid, tough, physical and he made the effort to be here in the summer and that showed us something.”
- It'll be interesting to see how much TE Jake Duzey plays today. He played last week for the first time since suffereing a torn patellar tendon last spring. How much does he have? I think we'll find out.
Iowa has brought six TEs today.
- KF on the radio said Daniels had a better week of practice.
And then this:
Dolph: Is Boone back? KF: I'm not going to answer that, Gary. [Snort.]
- Myers isn't here, either. Remember from last week, the No. 3 LT was Ryan Ward. He played after Croston left the game in the second half.
- Stingers is the topic on the Iowa injury report. (That's Myers.) They come with degrees and can be repetitive. Then, it needs time. Some players are more predisposed. Can modify pads and can treat with drugs afterward.
So, that's interesting.
- Iowa radio: Knee injury for Smith. Out a couple of weeks. You know about Myers. No illumination on Mitchell (I think it's injury)
- UW RT Hayden Biegel is out. Backup LT Jacob Maxwell will start in his spot.
- Taylor and Mabin are fine and out there (SS and CB).
- First career starts for Jerminic Smith and Croston. Daniels runs with the No. 1s.
- James Daniels is backup RT.
- Backup OL from right to left was RT James Daniels, Keegan Render, Eric Simmons, Steve Ferentz and Ryan Ward.
Enjoy the game.
