SPORTSWRITING
1. If I'm Jim Delany, I like the move Nebraska made Sunday to fire Bo Pelini.
Not because a man losing his job is something to celebrate. Not because Pelini deserves any piling on. Those are not reasons for the Big Ten commissioner to approve of Nebraska's somewhat surprising move.
The reason to like it is because it signals that one of the most traditionally successful schools in the conference is serious about getting back to winning championships and being a top-10 football program.
And the Big Ten needs all the help it can get in that area. -- Pat Forde, Yahoo Sports
2. In a season when the state of Mississippi became the unprecedented and unlikely epicenter of the sport, the Bulldogs and the Rebels wrote the ultimate Mississippi story, one side taking down the other, holding back their peers in a rivalry that may have long lacked national importance, but never local indignation.
'Yeah, it sucks,” Mullen said later. 'I'm not going to be able to freaking sleep for 365 days until they show up at our place next season.”
At the moment Mullen wasn't even talking about everything that was lost, the conference and national title opportunities. He was just talking about beating Ole Miss. In a state of 2.8 million, in a state forever told what it can't accomplish, from prosperity to playoffs, the neighborhood still matters most. -- Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports
3. If this was (Brian) Kelly's last game as the head coach at Notre Dame (i.e., rumors about the University of Florida or the NFL), how does this impact his legacy?
Can't overlook 2012. That was a special season that lacked a magical finish. Beyond that, Notre Dame has had to put up with mediocrity, inconsistency and frustration.
Ending this season with a four-game losing streak - capped by getting clobbered on the coast - lands the Irish program in a precarious position. This is supposed to be a team with a bright future. Couldn't tell it Saturday. -- Al Lesar, South Bend Tribune
