The best prep football quarterfinal games

Nov. 2, 2010 11:44 pm
A look at area prep football quarterfinals Friday and Monday:
BETTENDORF at CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (4A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
Records: Bettendorf is 11-0; Kennedy is 7-4.
Notable: The bracket-busting Cougars have become defensive dynamos in the postseason. Kennedy forced six turnovers in an 11-7 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier in the first round, then picked off six passes in a 13-7 win over North Scott in Round 2. As a result, the 12th-seeded Cougars join the 1, 2 and 3 seeds in the remainder of the 4A East draw. They won't sneak up on fourth-ranked Bettendorf, though. Kennedy upset Bettendorf in the first round last year. The Bulldogs have notched back-to-back playoff shutouts against Waterloo East and Dubuque Hempstead, and allow a 4A-best 4.3 points per game with seven shutouts. Kennedy's Trevor Heitland and R.J. Adams combined for 200 rushing yards against North Scott.
CEDAR FALLS at IOWA CITY HIGH (4A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
Records: Both teams are 11-0.
Notable: Finally, the two best teams of the Mississippi Valley Conference collide. No. 2 City High advanced by racking up 413 yards of total offense - including 314 on the ground - in a 43-27 win over Linn-Mar. The Little Hawks punted only once all game and racked up 22 first downs. Andrew McNulty hit Connor Alberhasky with a 56-yard touchdown pass late in the game to make it 36-27 and clinch the victory. Barkley Hill ran crazy for Cedar Falls in its 42-21 win over Muscatine on Monday, rushing for 332 yards and five touchdowns. Cedar Falls averages 40 points per game; City tallied 39.1 per contest.
WEST DELAWARE at DECORAH (3A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Monday, at Decorah
Records: Both teams are 9-2.
Notable: Two of three tri-champions from Class 3A District 4, and Decorah knocked out the other tri-champ (Waverly-Shell Rock, 31-7) in the last round. Cody Sacquitne rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and also kicked a field goal. The Vikings defeated West Delaware, 31-19, in Week 6. The Hawks haven't lost since, though, and pulled a mild upset in the second round, defeating Clear Lake, 23-16. The Hawks built a 23-0 lead, then hung on. Brandon Domeyer became the school's all-time leading rusher - 2,641 yards in his career - in a 144-yard performance.
WILLIAMSBURG at SOLON (3A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Monday, at Solon
Records: Both teams are 10-1.
Notable: Solon notched a 22-7 win over Williamsburg in Week 7, and that outcome determined the District 6 crown. Both teams have impressed in the postseason. Fourth-rated Solon spotted Grinnell the first touchdown on Monday, then roared back with 31 straight points in a 31-7 victory. The Spartans picked off four passes in winning their 13th straight postseason game. No. 7 Williamsburg has been piling up postseason points, whipping Maquoketa and Clear Creek Amana by decisions of 56-27 and 65-35. The Raiders racked up nearly 500 yards against CCA, including 217 rushing yards by Brett Waughop.
NORTH FAYETTE at DYERSVILLE BECKMAN (2A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Monday, at Dyersville
Records: North Fayette is 11-0; Beckman is 9-2.
Notable: Say this about Beckman: The Blazers have mastered the art of winning close games this postseason. After edging Clarion-Goldfield in overtime, the Blazers rallied from an 18-0 deficit to take down Waterloo Columbus, 32-26. Mitch Steger's 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave Beckman the lead for good, 19-18, and the Blazers went on to win their eighth straight game. Their last loss came to No. 2 North Fayette, 34-6, in Week 3. North Fayette was locked in a 28-all tie after three quarters against Sumner-Fredericksburg before kicking it in with three late touchdowns to pull away. The Hawks rushed for 391 yards.
IOWA CITY REGINA at SIGOURNEY-KEOTA (2A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Monday, at Sigourney
Records: Both teams are 11-0.
Notable: Top-ranked Regina still is seeking a challenge from a 2A opponent. The Regals have dunked their nine 2A foes to the tune of 437-18, including 53-0 and 59-0 against Albia and Mediapolis in the playoffs. Regina leads the state in 2A in both scoring offense (45.5 ppg) and defense (3.6 ppg). A stiffer test should arise from the fourth-rated Savage Cobras, who average 39.1 points per game themselves. Andrew Utterback rushed for 258 yards and five touchdowns to lead S-K past Camanche, 48-22. Regina will be without standout Braden Lehman, who was ejected for a personal foul on a late hit against Mediapolis and must sit out one game.
WEST BRANCH at NORTH CEDAR (1A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Monday, at Stanwood
Records: West Branch is 10-0; North Cedar is 10-1.
Notable: The top two teams in 1A District 6 meet in a showdown of a Week 9 struggle won by West Branch, 28-21. The third-ranked Bears rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to win that one. No. 9 North Cedar has gotten through two close postseason battles, edging Turkey Valley 7-0, then knocking off No. 7 Starmont, 36-35 in overtime. The Knights went for two and the win in OT and got it. West Branch's second-round win over Wapsie Valley was tougher than the 27-9 final would indicate. The Bears trailed 9-6 in the third quarter before Sid Thompson scored on a pair of TD runs and Jake Sheyko tacked on an interception return for a score.
NORTH TAMA at MASON CITY NEWMAN (A)
Time & place: 8:45 p.m. Friday, at Cedar Falls (UNI-Dome)
Records: Both teams are 11-0.
Notable: A matchup that figured to be inevitable once the districts were set up, Newman is ranked second in Class A while North Tama is third. Newman beat the Redhawks in the semifinals last year. The Redhawks have the state's best scoring defense in Class A, allowing 5.2 points per game. Brandon Boerm threw four touchdown passes in North Tama's 34-6 win over Elkader Central in the second round. Newman allowed just 10 second-half yards and pulled away from a tenuous 7-0 halftime lead to beat Postville, 34-0.
WACO at LISBON (A)
Time & place: 7 p.m. Friday, at Lisbon
Records: WACO is 11-0; Lisbon is 9-2.
Notable: Like West Branch and North Cedar, these teams met just two weeks ago in Week 9 with the district title on the line. Fourth-rated WACO won that encounter, 38-8. But if the ninth-ranked Lions play as they did in a 28-0 whipping of BGM on Wednesday, they'll be competitive. WACO has been dominant on both sides of the ball; the Warriors rank second in Class A in defense (6.8 ppg) and fourth in offense (40.6 ppg).
