Synergy in Class 1A top 10
Jeff Linder Sep. 30, 2013 12:43 pm
We've reached a consensus in our Class 1A football ballots. Unanimity. Harmony. The four pollsters in The Gazette's football rankings have the same 10 teams on their respective ballots. Different orders, mind you, but the same teams.Of course, it starts with Iowa City Regina, winner of three straight state championships and victor of 47 consecutive games. No surprise there. The No. 1 teams are unchanged in each of the six classes. Four of them are unanimous.Cedar Rapids Xavier continues to lead the Class 4A list; the Saints have posted four consecutive shutouts and have allowed only one touchdown all season.Sioux City Heelan (Class 3A), Regina (1A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (8-Man) are the other unanimous No. 1s. Waukon leads the 2A poll; BGM is tops in Class A.Xavier is one of just two Mississippi Valley Conference teams in the 4A rankings. Iowa City West is No. 3.Changes toward the top were minimal. The top five remained the same in 4A, 3A, 1A and A. There was moderate shuffling in 2A after former co-No. 4s Spirit Lake and Union both lost.
