CEDAR RAPIDS -- Kyle Stocker won his first race with his twin Matt.First out of the womb. By five minutes. This one was somewhat closer. And this one was captured by Little Bro.The Stocker boys finished 1-2 to lead Cedar Rapids Prairie to the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet championship Thursday afternoon at Noelridge Park."I had to double-check when I peeked back there," Matt said. "I thought, 'Oh, is that my brother?' "The top-ranked team in Class 4A, Prairie overcame a slow start by several of its runners; a strong final mile helped the Hawks beat Cedar Falls, 36-50, for the title. Cedar Rapids Washington was third with 74 points."It's been a season of some magic moments, and this was another one of them," said Hawks Coach Bill Schwarz. "Heading into the last mile, we were not winning this meet."Matt Stocker finished in 15:50. Kyle was next, in 15:59, passing two Cedar Falls runners down the stretch."I felt really good the whole race," Kyle said. "Way up in second place, I've never been in this position. I didn't know if I was killing myself or running a stupid race."Jordan Burns (seventh), Jacob Aune (11th) and Justin Burns (15th) rounded out Prairie's scorers. The Hawks' 1-2 finish was impressive, but it was trumped by the 1-2-3 effort of Iowa City High's Rebecca Rethwisch, Erin Danielson and Meg Richardson as the Little Hawks easily took the girls' crown.City High accumulated 32 points, outrunning Iowa City West (65) and Cedar Falls (74).Rethwisch was in control most of the way, breaking the race open on the south side of the Noelridge bridge and winning in 14:40."At the mile mark is usually when I make my push," Rethwisch said. "That's when our coaches tell us to 'ask the question' and see if anybody will answer it, if anybody wants to come along for the ride."Rethwisch was clocked in 14:40, Danielson in 14:50, Richardson in 14:53."My senior year, I'm just really, really surprised with the way I've improved," Rethwisch said. "A lot of people don't improve when they're a senior. It's great to go out with some good memories."Linn-Mar's Carolyn Newhouse and Morgan Uridil were fourth and fifth.Chase Grabau of Linn-Mar and Brook Price of City High were third and fourth in the boys' competition. The entire Cedar Rapids Kennedy team was disqualified for violating a uniform rule. Washington Athletics Director Paul James said the Cougars wore several different colored undershirts.
