State softball consies: Xavier settles for 8th

FORT DODGE -- Mackenzie Clair singled home Kassie Marshall with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give West Des Moines Dowling a 7-6 win over Cedar Rapids Xavier in the Class 4A seventh-place game at the state softball tournament Wednesday at the Rogers Sports Complex.Xavier finished 34-11, dropping all three of its games this week. The Saints fell to Sioux City East, 5-2, earlier Wednesday."We just didn't execute all day," said Xavier Coach Brian Erbe. "We made mistakes we hadn't made all season. Fundamental things we did well all season, we didn't do today."Xavier jumped to leads of 3-0 and 4-1, fell into a 6-4 deficit, then tied it on McKenna Miller's two-run home run in the top of the sixth.Miller drove in three runs. Abby Bedard was 3-for-5 and scored twice.Against East, Miller hit a two-run homer to put the Saints up 2-1 in the fifth. But the Black Raiders responded with five in the top of the sixth.

Maquoketa 5th in 3ABrittany Willms singled home Nicole Snyder in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Maquoketa a 4-3 win over Sioux City Heelan in the Class 3A fifth-place game.Kelsey Bollman hit a three-run home run for the Cardinals (34-7).Maquoketa scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and beat Waverly-Shell Rock, 5-1, in the consolation semifinals despite just two hits.

Mid-Prairie 5th, Jesup 8th in 2AOlivia Lugar pitched a one-hitter as Mid-Prairie defeated Hinton, 1-0, to capture fifth place in Class 2A.Lugar had three hits in the consolation semifinal as Mid-Prairie rallied from a 5-0 deficit to edge IKM-Manning, 7-6.The Golden Hawks finished 23-17.Jesup (27-18) placed eighth. The J-Hawks lost to Hinton, 11-1, in the consolation semis, then fell to IKM-Manning, 4-3, in the seventh-place game.
