State GBB '14: Wednesday games

Wednesday's games at the girls state basketball tournament:

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINAL

No. 8 Western Dubuque (21-2) vs. No. 2 Sioux City Heelan (20-3)

Time: 11:45 a.m.

Tournament history: Western Dubuque is making its third appearance. The Bobcats' last appearance, in 1987, ended in a championship. Heelan has qualified for the eighth time, its third in a row. The Crusaders grabbed titles in 2008 and 2010.

Coaches: Amy Ostwinkle is 79-55 in six seasons at Western Dubuque. Darron Koolstra has compiled a 106-19 mark in five years at Heelan.

Key players: Rose Simon-Ressler (5-9, jr.) paces Western Dubuque at 12.4 points per game. Megan Maahs (6-0, soph.) adds 12.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest. Jenna Bork (5-7, sr.) leads Heelan with 18.8 points per game. Megan Todd (5-7, jr.) adds 12.9 points per game, Tristan Beaulieu (5-9, jr.) 11.0.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy (16-7) vs. No. 1 Iowa City High (23-0)

Time: 5 p.m.

Tournament history: Kennedy is making its ninth appearance. The Cougars were 4A semifinalists in their last two trips (2009 and 2010). City High is here for the seventh time. The Little Hawks were 4A champions in 2008.

Coaches: Tony Vis is in his second year at Kennedy and owns a 31-15 there. He is 288-130 in 18 years overall and is taking his third different team to state. Bill McTaggart has coached City High 16 years, amassing a 275-100 mark. He is 366-161 in 21 years overall.

Key players: Morgan Martin (6-1, sr.) leads a balanced Kennedy lineup with 11.6 points and 8.7 rebounds. Paige Hendrickson (5-8, sr.) and Stephanie Botkin (6-0, jr.) add 11.3 and 11.0 points, respectively. Haley Lorenzen (6-3, sr.), a University of Florida recruit, averages 21.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game to pace City High. Courtney Joens (5-10, soph.) adds 15.0 points per game while Kiera Washpun (5-6, sr.) offers 13.7 points, 5.1 assists and 4.1 steals per contest.
