State GBB '14: Monday's games

Monday's games at the girls state basketball tournament:

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS

No. 2 Cascade (25-0) vs. No. 15 Manson-NW Webster (20-4)

Time: 5 p.m.

Tournament history: Cascade is making its fourth trip. The Cougars were 3A semifinalists last year. Manson and MNW have been at state eight times.

Coaches: Mike Sconsa owns a 10-year record of 196-43 at Cascade and is making his third state appearance. Bret Larson is 59-12 in three seasons at MNW.

Key players: Abbey Meyer (5-3, sr.) averages 12.4 points, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals per game to lead Cascade. Carolyn Trumm (5-8, jr.) adds 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds and shoots 59 percent from the floor. Faith Troshynski (5-9, soph.) has stepped forward since the January injury of MNW star Ellie Herzberg, and is averaging a team-best 13.1 points per game with 59 3-pointers. Herzberg (5-9, sr.) was averaging 25.6 ppg and has missed the last 16 games.

No. 5 North Linn (23-1) vs. No. 12 South Central Calhoun (21-3)

Time: 8:30 p.m.

Tournament history: North Linn is making its second appearance; the other was in 1997. South Central Calhoun is at state for the first time.

Coaches: Brian Wheatley is in his 10th year at North Linn and has compiled a 165-67 record. Dave Birks is coaching his fourth year at SCC and owns a 60-30 mark. In 30 years overall, he's 461-208. Birks coached Rockwell City-Lytton to the 1A title in 2004.

Key players: Nicole Miller (5-9, jr.) averages a 2A-best 25.6 points per game, plus 6.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 4.2 steals per contest. Libby Falconer (6-1, sr.) adds 9.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game; Maddie Boer (5-7, jr.) registers 9.0 ppg. Haley Birks (6-0, jr.) is the top player for the Titans, averaging 14.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Kori Assman (6-1, jr.) adds 9.3 points per game.
