State dual quarterfinal: Alburnett marches on in 1A

DES MOINES -- Alburnett's title trek remained on course.The top-seeded Pirates took a step closer to repeating as state champions with a dominant 54-25 win over No. 8 Logan-Magnolia in the quarterfinal round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 1A State Duals on Wednesday morning at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.Alburnett received pins from Ben Moyer (106), Jacob Koch (126), two-time state champion Hunter Washburn (132), 138-pounder Conner Shulista and Bryce Paul at 145, building a 30-6 lead.The Pirates added pins from state champion Dylan Windfield (170), 182-pounder Austin Hoyle and Robbie Carrothers at 220.Alburnett faces Clarion-Goldfield in the semifinals. The Cowboys beat Wilton, 38-31.Clarion-Goldfield trailed 28-26, entering the last three matches, and took a lead with Ryan Anderson's fall at 195. With the Cowboys clinging to a 32-31 lead, heavyweight Mitch Gambrill won by fall to move them to the semifinals.Second-seeded Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont is a win away from a second straight finals appearance. The 2013 runner-up to Alburnett handled No. 7 West Marshall, 52-21, in the quarterfinals.Third-seeded Don Bosco face the Rockets in the semifinals, dismissing Woodbury Central, 42-25, in the 1A quarterfinals.
