Springville sweeps Cedar Valley Christian at home

Jun. 4, 2015 11:38 pm
SPRINGVILLE - Young and inexperienced, but now they have a couple wins under their belts.
Springville suffered a rough start, but found its winning ways over a program that was coming off its own important win.
The Orioles swept Cedar Valley Christian, 15-9 and 10-0 in five innings, last night in a Tri-Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader at home.
Springville improved to 2-6, fielding a team with four returning letterwinners and two regular players – Trevor Hullett and Wyatt Dlouhy - from last season.
'It's a confidence builder,” Springville Coach Tony Dlouhy said. 'We're young.”
The Orioles scored six more runs last night than their previous six games combined. They belted 25 total hits, getting multiple hits from Nick Hagensick, Carter Gillmore, Hullett, Cody Bell and Henry Hoogland in the opener.
Hullett went 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and four RBIs in the opener. He reached bases in all nine at-bats in the twin bill, adding three more RBIs in the nightcap.
'He's one of those kids when he gets up he doesn't get cheated,” Tony Dlouhy said. 'He makes sure when he takes a cut that he takes a hard cut. You can see what he do with the ball. He can drive it.”
Andy Hagensick provided a strong start for the Orioles in the nightcap. He struck out six batters the first two innings, allowing just two hits and six baserunners in four innings. He finished with eight strikeouts and will make a big impact for a 'green” pitching staff with many getting their first varsity action.
'That's the best he's looked this year,” Tony Dlouhy said. 'If we can keep him on point and get him to throw like he did (Thursday night) he's going to do well for us.”
Hagensick sparked a special play with the Huskies rallying in the fourth. After a leadoff walk and a base hit, Hagensick snagged a ball bunted in the air, starting a rare triple play forcing runners off first and second.
'Thankfully Andy got off the mound quick enough to catch it before it dropped,” Tony Dlouhy said. 'They had runners going when the batter squared, so I've never been a part of a triple play like that in high school or college. That's a first for me and the boys.”
Cedar Valley Christian (1-3) showed fight, fending off the mercy rule with Springville up 12 in the bottom of the fifth of the opener. The Huskies clawed back with three runs in the fifth. They added two in the sixth and one in the final inning.
'It's fun to coach them,” Cedar Valley Christian Coach Randy Gustafson said. 'They don't quit.”
Travis Geels had two hits and scored three times and Eric Gustafson had two hits and two runs for the Huskies. Gustafson, who made three diving plays for outs at shortstop in the second game, is the son of the CVC head coach, joining brothers, Drew and Kyle, in the lineup.
'They are good players,” Randy Gustafson said. 'It's fun to have them.”
Cedar Valley Christian had one win in its first three seasons, starting in 2012. The Huskies were 0-23 last year, 1-29-1 in 2013 and 0-18 in its first season. They already have a win over WACO and lost a close game to Harmony. The victory was big for the team.
'It gives the kids some confidence,” said Gustafson, whose team plays home games at Daniels Park. 'I have some kids new at this.”
