South Winn knows how to win

A 42-29 win Friday night over North Fayette moved South Winneshiek to 6-0 and in control of Class 1A, District 4.The fifth-ranked Warriors beat defending 1A champ Saint Ansgar last week but suffered few ill affects emotionally from that big win, leading start to finish against a North Fayette club that's uncharacteristically 2-4.“I knew they'd play their best football against us, and they did,” Ohrt said. “They came out after us.”But South Winn responded, getting five touchdowns from running back Colton Hageman, 164 yards passing from quarterback Garrett Bohach and three interceptions from sophomore Jordan Rommes. NF threw only five passes in the game, as running back Josh Mackey had 198 yards rushing.“Offensively, yes, I'm happy where we're at,” said Ohrt. “But we're still really young on defense and trying to get better. We're very optimistic we will.”South Winneshiek leaves district play next week to play at 2A seventh-ranked Waukon, which lost its first game of the season Friday night at LaPorte City Union, 34-33.“They're big and physical,” Ohrt said. “By far the best team we will play.”

This and that- Tyler Odneal had 222 yards rushing to help Class A top-rated Wapsie Valley (6-0) to a 55-8 win over North-Linn. It appears the District 3 championship will come down to the Wapsie Valley-Starmont game in two weeks at Wapsie.Starmont (5-1) had 415 yards rushing in a 59-6 crushing of Edgewood-Colesburg. Gabe Hamlett had 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns on only seven carries, adding another touchdown on a return.- So you think it'd be cool to be a prep football coach?
