Some 2021-22 Iowa men’s basketball nonconference games set
5 of Hawkeyes’ 11 nonconference foes are known

Jun. 1, 2021 11:57 am, Updated: Jun. 2, 2021 8:50 am
The five known teams on Iowa’s 2021-22 nonconference men’s basketball schedule had a combined record of 31-80 last season.
Four are what is known in college basketball as “buy games.” Everyone plays them, either to go on the road and get paid or to stay home and get a win and a home gate.
The fifth is the Hawkeyes’ Dec. 9 game at Iowa State (2-22 last season). The other four:
Nov. 9: Longwood (12-17 overall last season, 10-10 in the Big South Conference)
Nov. 16: North Carolina Central (5-9, 3-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference)
Nov. 18: Alabama State (4-14 overall, with each game in the Southwestern Athletic Conference)
Dec. 21: Southeastern Louisiana (8-18 overall, 5-10 in the Southland Conference)

The scheduling news will be more interesting once it’s announced who (and where) Iowa will play in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The Hawkeyes had a home game against North Carolina in last year’s event.
Iowa could also participate against a Big East Conference team in the Gavitt Tip-Off Games, an event that was suspended last season. That would leave four more openings in the Hawkeyes’ nonconference schedule.
The Hawkeyes’ 10 home and 10 road opponents have been determined, with dates and times to be announced. They are:
Home and Away — Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue
Home Only — Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern
Away Only — Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin
Iowa also is contracted to play in the 2022 Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla., on Nov. 25-26.
