Solon boys' basketball coach Randall returns to team

Jan. 27, 2014 8:29 pm
SOLON - Brad Randall is back on the bench, and he'll remain there until the end of the boys' basketball season.
The longtime Solon head coach said Monday he has returned after missing his team's previous six games while being investigated by the school district. Neither he or the district will discuss specifics of the investigation or its conclusion.
Randall said his 21st season as head coach will be his last, as he will retire from teaching and coaching, a decision made before whatever incident led to him being investigated.
"The district administration conducted an investigation into a complaint it received against me," said Randall in a prepared statement. "Legal counsel represented both parties in the process. I was notified of the complaint and the findings of the investigation, but like the district, cannot discuss them with you.
"I was notified that I may return to my head coaching duties beginning Jan. 27, 2014. I look forward to resuming my duties as head coach and expect a successful conclusion to the basketball season. I am not acknowledging any wrongdoing and am maintaining my innocence against certain allegations."
The coach conducted Monday's practice for Solon, which lost a pair of games last weekend to drop to 9-3. The Spartans have been ranked by The Gazette/Iowa Prep Sports in Class 3A most of the season.
Randall has compiled a fine 358-110 record at Solon, including four state tournament appearances and a state championship. He thinks this team has a chance to get him back to Des Moines in his final season.
"Our bracket is tough but certainly do-able for this team," said Randall. "We're in the hunt in the Wamac Conference, had a big bump against Vinton-Shellsburg. That was a bump in the road ... But the kids really looked ready to go today."
A message left for Solon Athletics Director Keith McSweeney seeking comment was not immediately returned Monday night.
