I'm not a recruitnik, but I can find football's Signing Day as entertaining as the next person.
Here is an array of quotes I've assembled from this great day.
'We're not selling hope here, we're selling results.” – Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio
'It was a great January. A great close by our staff.” – Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads
'Twenty-two of the guys that we recruited were cap tanks of their high school football team. Three state champions. Three Under Armour All‑Americans. Two Army All‑Americans. Eleven commits rated as four stars or higher according to ESPN or Rivals, if you care about those things.” - Penn State Coach James Franklin
'First of all, very exciting day. Very excited about this class. Very excited for this staff.” - Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn
'We're all, I think, probably like every coach in America really enthused about the group we were able to sign today.” – Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz
'I will be taking my talents to Collegeville, MN and attend the University of St. John's.” - recruit Jaden Bjorklund
of South Saint Paul.
'Time for destruction.” - Memphis signee Khalil Johnson
'Social media will be the downfall of society.” – Texas Coach Charlie Strong
'If you want to red-shirt, go somewhere else.” – Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer
'I mean, this is like, if you're a football coach this is Christmas! You get to open presents and the fax machine is like the presents and they just keep coming across so to see that fax machine light up, it went out there for a while so that was another headache that we had to jump through.” – Tulsa Coach Philip Montgomery
'My daughter called me this morning at about 6:30. I was here (at the office). She said, ‘Good luck, Daddy. I finally know the meaning of National Signing Day.' She kind of caught me off-guard. She said, ‘Yeah, Mom just told me. I used to think it was the day all of the players came in to sign a ball.' ” – Tennessee recruiting coordinator Zach Azzanni
'I have no idea how this class will pan out. All the experts slot it into the lower half of the Big Ten, to varying degrees. These experts also believed running back Savon Huggins, who just transferred from Rutgers to Northern Iowa after three difficult years, was a five-star stud, and Kemoko Turay, the defensive end who looks like the next high draft pick out of Piscataway, was a two-star reach.
'In short: Who the hell knows?” – Steve Politi,
Newark Star-Ledger
'OK - we're all in this state. We all want to build the best football team that we can. We want to build champions and be a consistent champion. OK? So I'm going to put it on you. What are they reading? K. Social media's big nowadays. What are ya saying? What are ya saying? Well, I can say that we've gotten better every year. K. I can say our academic standards have gone skyrocket. I can say that our young men in this program right now are doing what's they need to do to be successful in life. Mmk. So the challenge again, as I said after that Northwestern game (a win in regular-season finale), the challenge is still how important is the University of Illinois to you? Because it's very, very important to us, and we know that we can be successful if we're all in it together. Because our intentions are to build a champion.
'If they want to build champions, we're all in this together. Not everybody's going to see the same thing, but I think as much positive stuff as we can continue to broadcast about this great institution and the athletic programs that we have and how our athletic programs are moving forward in really every category of sports that we play, what we're doing academically, I think there's a lot of things that you can talk about positively with this program.
'Everybody, let's build this thing into a championship. The more positive stuff you can talk about, the better off we all are.” – Illinois Coach Tim Beckman
'I'm throwing all my USC stuff away, I'm all UCLA now.” - Snoop Dogg, former USC superfan. His son, wide receiver Cordell Broadaus, signed with UCLA Tuesday. Snoop will even stop wearing USC underwear.
