Jeff Linder Sep. 10, 2013 7:30 am
Five in, five out. That's the new look of the Class A top 10 in The Gazette's weekly football rankings.Half of last week's ranked teams were defeated and fell out, making way for five new teams. Included in that group is Akron-Westfield (2-0), which debuts at No. 5.There is one minor change at the top of the six classes.Waukon (2-0), which moved into a first-place tie in Class 2A with Carroll Kuemper (2-0) last week, took sole possession of the No. 1 spot this week after handling Charles City. The Indians have started with two straight shutouts of 3A competition.Four teams are unanimous No. 1s.Cedar Rapids Xavier (2-0) received all four votes in Class 4A after blanking Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 44-0, last week. Sioux City Heelan (2-0) defeated its second straight intracity rival last week, and is unanimous in 3A.Iowa City Regina (2-0) won its 44th straight game in convincing fashion -- 38-0 over Solon -- and garnered all the first-place votes in 1A, and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (2-0) is unanimous in Eight Man.BGM (2-0) remains No. 1 in Class A, just ahead of West Lyon.Defending 3A champion Decorah (2-0) climbed into a tie for second in that class after handling Marion, 34-7.
